You will think of a problem in your life – or in your parents’ lives – or in your friends’ lives – or the community - that is annoying and needs solving.
You will design a solution to this problem. Your teacher or your parents or another adult can help, but you must do the work. That includes research to make sure this invention doesn’t already exist! Or if it does exist, how does your solution improve the existing invention?
Along the way, you will keep an Inventor’s Log describing each step in your process.
You will build the invention (but keep the cost down – using recycled materials etc). You can get help from an adult, but most of the work should be yours.
You will make a display board that tells the story of your invention, what it does, who might use it and you will demonstrate and explain your invention in your classroom.
You may also have the opportunity to demonstrate and explain your invention at your school or even at the Regional California Invention Conventions.
Here is a video and supporting documentation describing the Invention Process.

Ayden, 4th Grade, Invented the Doggy Under Bite Helper, a bowl for dogs with severe under / over bites.
PROBLEM: My dog was born with a severe over bite that it prevents him from eating from a normal dog bowl without having the entire upper part of his mouth outside of the bowl while his underdeveloped lower mouth(chin) is inside the bowl at which time he bites the side of the bowl to scoop up his food. Sometimes he has to eat like he is eating a taco. SOLUTION: I was so excited how the adjustable bowl I invented for him actually moves in such a way that he is able to keep his whole mouth in the bowl and scoop his food up just like any other dog. It was amazing how he adjusted to the bowl immediately”

Nathan – 5th Grader invented the Feel N Fret Guitar
“A person who is blind would have a hard time learning how to play the guitar without someone showing them where all the parts are. I wanted to create a guitar that a blind person could buy and use to teach themselves how to play,” Nathan says. “The Feel N Fret Guitar has braille and textures on the guitar to show the student where the frets are and that way they can begin to play some music.”
